Bunning of Kinetic Boats in Tauranaga, Bay of Plenty New
Zealand, commissioned this 8.6 m Power Catamaran design
from Noah Thompson.
The
design was done for a complete kitset build. The hulls
were built in aluminium at Claytons engineering shop in
Auckland and then brought down to the Kinetic Boats
workshop in the Bay to be assembled to the deck.
The deck
was made using light weight balsa core infused panels
made by Innovation Lamination www.innovationlamination.com
and then computer cut to suit the kitset method. The
deck was built on a jig while the hull was under
construction in Auckland. When the hull and deck finally
met they fitted perfectly together, showing that the
kitset method works when you are building two components
in different locations to be joined together at a later
date.
The first
vessel was focused on being a prototype for the final
production run. The production run will still use the
aluminium hulls and have a complete fiberglass gel
coated moulded deck liner.
The
interior features a large double berth cabin, a separate
full head room shower and toilet. A large galley and a
dinning table that folds down to a seat or berth.
The aft
deck has slightly higher gunwales for the family
oriented market. The vessel design is a compromise
between living area, and aft deck space, while still
fitting into the "Tow-able " size vessel. With
a beam of 2.5 the cat is legally tow-able anywhere in
NZ. Clayton tows his cat with a Nissan Patrol with
ease.
This cat
proves that a cat with a 2.5m beam is still very stable
at speed and at rest. The performance of the hulls with
twin 175 Verados are achieving top speeds of 45 knots.
Smaller engines could be fitted to the production
models.
After
showing this vessel at several boat shows in NZ, and
receiving feed back from customers, has lead the
production model design to be flexible in layout for the
owners. Although the design has one layout, we now
custom design features to suit the individual owners
request.
This
vessel is available for viewing and demos. For further

Clayton
is now planning a range of models along the same lines
as the 8.6m cabin cat. The next on the drawing board is
a complete aluminium 7m cabin sport fisher to ad to his
range. Please direct any interest in having this model
built in NZ to www.kineticboats.com
